Is it the Right Time to Start a New Business?

Over the last months I have been asked this question many times, so it does seem like its a good time to talk about this! Starting a new business is a big commitment and can look quite scary. It takes skills, money, time and so much more. And a successful business can completely change the path of your life. It can give you the income you need both short and long term. It will help you establish your future and often your family's future.

Over the years of my life I have helped both myself and others start a new business and make it profitable. I have dealt with many types of businesses and economies but today is different. We have new technologies that are expanding extremely fast and the culture of our community has changed to where what did work no longer does. Making that step of going from employee to business owner can often give a tight sensation in the chest. There is a reason for that. And we will address that as we go.

I started my first business when I was very young. I was in my early 20's and I had no idea what I was doing. But I needed some way to earn money and my Dad was willing to help me figure out what I was doing. I too was intimidated by the process back then. Fortunately I had people in my world that would support me so I was not quite so lonely and stressed over every decision.

Not all Businesses Are Equal

You can have two people in the same industry with similar ideas, goals and desires. Each of the business they create can look completely different. The path they take that business on will have different corners and a different personality. Being willing to embrace the uniqueness that your business will be is one sign if this is the right time to start your business. Your business will be as special and unique as you are! Which from where I sit is amazing.

But what will be your story? Knowing what you are going to create and being committed to that is something most people are not willing to be. However if you are still with me, you might just have that in you. Remember you are the reason your business is special and not the other way around.

But I don't know how!

Starting something new means you are not going to know everything that you need to know. When my kids were little I loved watching each of them learn how to crawl, walk and then run. At first they could barely lift their heads and before I blinked they could outrun me. The same things goes for starting a new business. Remember to give yourself grace and enjoy the growth stages! If you have never done this before do not expect perfection!

A few years ago I started a business at the exact moment that the economy was in a recession, people were losing their homes. I was working on a home services business at the time and we had an incredible first year. But not without mistakes. Making mistakes is the one of the most amazing and annoying ways to learn.

Let's Leverage Your Experiences

However, today you are not a young child. You have lived a full life that has given you skills, experiences and ways to be successful. Taking those skills and transferring them to your business can give you a pay raise and the more quickly you do it will help your business expand. It makes me think of a friend of mine who one day became a single mom. She was not expecting to raise 4 young boys alone. Suddenly she had all the responsibility of feeding and taking care of her kids. She started her new business at that moment. There was no time to think about it or figure out if the time was right she said go. Over the years of knowing her and seeing her work with her kids and her clients, I recognize the very same heart that makes her successful with her children is the same heart that works with her clients. She took her skills in one area of her life and translated it to develop a business that fed her family.
